Join us for the second May Fly-in at Taupo Aerodrome!
Friday Night Fly-Ins are designed to bring the experience of a General Aviation fly-in to VATSIM. While we can't simulate the fun that fly-in's provide once you arrive, we can certainly provide the fun experience of actually flying in.
These events will be moving around airports in NZ and could be Controlled and Un-controlled airports but the flying is primarly focused on VFR flying.
Fly-in time is scheduled for 8:30pm NZ time, (0830 UTC) so plan to arrive at Taupo around then.
Located on the Central Plateu of the North Island, Taupo (NZAP) is a samll uncontrolled airfield located just to the south east of Taupo itself. It operates of a main 1386m long seal 17/35 and a 670m long grass 10/28 that is normally only approved for local operator use. Taupo is a major adventure aviation location with a number of sky-diving and heli-tour operaters. It also takes in commerical flights from Air NZ and Sounds Air along with plenty of GA activity with a popular cafe at the airport serving as a nice stopping over point for cross country trips.
Some nice short flights include departures from airfields like Turangi (NZTN), Rangitaiki (NZRK) and Rotorua (NZRO). Some longer options include the likes of Hamilton (NZHN), Napier (NZNR) and Palmerston North (NZPM). Taupo is fully IFR since it accepts commerical flights so another fantastic chance to bring out the GA IFR flying.
After arriving, be sure to stick around to watch and listen to the other traffic coming in and out for the airport for the event, then why not pick a different airport to depart to and enjoy the fantastic scenery the area has to offer.
ATC
ATC for Core positions will be rostered on by the Events Director for Friday Fly-in events.
This decision was made due to the high interest in controlling and limited positions available.

Hastings is an uncontrolled airport with ATC provided by Bay Approach from 6500ft and above which will be staffed for the event.
