Friday Fly-ins is now moving to weekly with the first Fly-in being Rangiora Airport!
Friday Night Fly-Ins are designed to bring the experience of a General Aviation fly-in to VATSIM. While we can't simulate the fun that fly-in's provide once you arrive, we can certainly provide the fun experience of actually flying in.
These events will be moving around airports in NZ and could be Controlled and Un-controlled airports but the flying is primarly focused on VFR flying.
Fly-in time is scheduled for 8:30pm NZ time, (0830 UTC) so plan to arrive at Rangiora around then.
Located 12 nautical miles north of Christchurch, Rangiora (NZRT) is a small grass airport that serves as a popular GA and training base for the Christchurch area. Operating off grass runways 07/25, 10/28 and 04/22 ranging from 1180m to 515m in length, Rangiora is located in an MBZ just north of Christchurch and is home to one of the three Cantebury Aero Club bases and a large number of private GA aircraft.
There are a ton of short flight options in the area ranging from just a few minutes from Christchurch (NZCH), Forest Field (NZFF) or West Melton (NZWL), to some longer options such as Kaikoura (NZKI) or Ashburton (NZAS). If you want the IFR option you would need to fly into Christchurch IFR and then break off VFR to Rangiora.
After arriving, be sure to stick around to watch and listen to the other traffic coming in and out for the airport for the event, then why not pick a different airport to depart to and enjoy the fantastic scenery the area has to offer.
ATC
ATC for Core positions will be rostered on by the Events Director for Friday Fly-in events.
This decision was made due to the high interest in controlling and limited positions available.

Rangiora is an uncontrolled airfield up to 2500ft where Christchurch Approach takes over. Expect both Christchurch Approach and Tower to be online. Position reports will be on 122.8 at Rangiora
